The Consumer Products Safety Commission is preparing statements to warn parents of the dangers of using Baby Slings, the cloth slings that many parents are currently using to carry infants and young babies around.
The concern is that infants can suffocate while being carried and a few infants have already died this way. Many moms and dads are not aware of this danger, which is more possible for infants that are very young. Apparently, it is the "C-like" position that causes safety advocates the most worry. The curved position can cause the baby, which has little head and neck control in the early months, to flop its head forward, chin-to-chest, which restricts the baby's ability to breathe. The other concern is when the infant's face is against the parent snugly and cannot breathe.
Other warnings about slings have preceded this one, with fears of babies falling from the slings, which has also happened on occasion.
